Kristina Stoeckl (1977, Austria) is Full Professor of Sociology at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome, where she coordinates the PhD Programme in Politics and directs the REORDERS Lab. From 2015 to 2023 she worked at the University of Innsbruck, where she was Full Professor of Sociology from 2019.

She studied Comparative Literature and Russian at the University of Innsbruck (2001) and International Relations and European Studies at Central European University in Budapest (2003). She received her PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence in 2007. Before joining the University of Innsbruck, she was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2009–2012) and an APART Fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the University of Vienna (2012–2015).

From 2016 to 2022, she directed the ERC- and FWF-funded project Postsecular Conflicts, which investigated transnational conservative mobilization across Russia, Europe, and the United States. In 2026, she was awarded an Italian FIS3 Advanced Grant for POLISMOD – A Political Sociology of Religious Moderation in 21st-Century Europe (2026–2031), a comparative study of religious actors, democratic pluralism, and political conflict in five European countries.

Her research lies at the intersection of sociology of religion, political sociology, and social and political theory, with a focus on religion and democracy, culture wars, transnational conservative mobilization, Russia and Russian Orthodoxy, and conflicts over gender and human rights.

Her recent books include The Global Fight Against LGBTI Rights (with Phillip Ayoub, New York University Press, 2024), which received several international book awards in 2025, and The Moralist International: Russia in the Global Culture Wars (with Dmitry Uzlaner, Fordham University Press, 2022), published in Italian by Luiss University Press in 2024.

In 2026, she was elected a Corresponding Member abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2016 to 2023 she was a member of its Young Academy. She has also held visiting fellowships at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies in Florence, and Uppsala University.
